.... Human rights abuses reported during the year included: limitation on citizens' right to change their government during the most recent elections; unlawful killings, and beating, abuse, and mistreatment of detainees and opposition supporters by security forces; poor prison conditions; arbitrary arrest and detention, particularly of those suspected of sympathizing with or being members of the opposition or insurgent groups; detention of thousands without charge and lengthy pretrial detention; infringement on citizens' privacy rights and frequent refusal to follow the law regarding search warrants; use of excessive force by security services in an internal conflict and counter-insurgency operations; restrictions on freedom of the press; arrest, detention, and harassment of journalists for publishing articles critical of the government; restrictions on freedom of assembly; limitations on freedom of association; violence and societal discrimination against women and abuse of children; female genital mutilation (FGM); exploitation of children for economic and sexual purposes; trafficking in persons; societal discrimination against persons with disabilities and religious and ethnic minorities; and government interference in union activities, including killing and harassment of union leaders. Kinijit council members met March 2 2008 in Addis Ababa .
Two decisions were passed. Regarding to the legality of the party the council accepted the motion forwarded by the executive requesting to register the party with a new name but still keeping the spirit and basic philosophies of Kinijit of yesterday. The council has passed the decision accepting the motion forwarded by the executive.The council has also elected five individuals to fill the place of those who left the party.
In order to help supporters and members participate in suggesting possible name for the coming party, there is a new email address suggestname@gmail.com. members and supporters please participate in the naming process as soon as possible. (www.kinijitethiopia.org) |

Debebe Eshetu inspires Seattle

On January 12, 2008,  in the cloudy Seattle afternoon, at Garfield Community Center, something incredible took place - the city and its inhabitants were inspired and motivated to intensify their struggle for justice, unity, and democracy. It is not every day that one gets a chance to hear, discuss and ask questions of an Ethiopian icon like Debebe Eshetu. Seattle was fortunate to also hear from and discuss with Ato Aschalew Ketema, member of Kinijit Executive Council. ( Read full Article )
