| Shall Democracy
Surrender?
This article is a personal
reaction to the so called efforts of “the
mediation group” that has no ulterior
motive than compelling the Kinijit Freedom
leaders imprisoned in Kaliti Palace (aka
,Kaliti Prison) to surrender to the stubborn
dictatorship of the Addis butcher Meles
Zenawi. Mediation or dialogue, as long as
it is genuine, will bring everlasting peace.
Based on this clear understanding no one
objects the current efforts of some personalities
which aimed to break the Ethiopian political
problem.
However, the mediators
have a national duty as citizens of the
nation to be guided by fundamental principles.
As to my understanding any person of Ethiopian
origin when it comes to national interests
vis a vis other agendas should uphold first
the nation. Hence, when the mediation kicks
off, the mediators should first try to ignore
political situations and power analysis.
In this regard the mediators should try
their best to let our beloved country Ethiopia
goes to the path of freedom and democracy
through their efforts. The process in anyways
shouldn’t be a window for an emerging
or developing dictatorship. If that is the
case, history and the nation will put these
personalities in the black list.
This world has seen a number
of dialogues and mediations. In all these
dialogues democracy might sit-down for discussion
with dictatorship: however never surrendered
to its cause. The jailed Kinijit leaders
have put 8 pre conditions for joining the
parliament. All of it deals with democratizing
the nation: free election board, non partisan
security force, freedom of expression, rule
of law etc. Hence, if these people who raised
such clear democratic issues apologize to
the ruling party/dictatorship, it is not
them that will surrender to killers and
dictators it is democracy itself. Mandela
and his colleagues never discussed surrendering
for apartheid for the sake of getting out
of prison. By doing this democracy finally
let apartheid to surrender to its knee.
In history: fascism, communism, etc surrendered
to democracy never the vice versa. Our world
in anyway did not ask apology from Hitler
and Mussolini. Rather the freedom forces
demolished the forces of hate. There is
no way Ethiopia to let democracy give its
hands to dictatorship. In this case we advise
the mediators not to mediate the rebirth
of dictatorship in the name of political
dialogue.
